It is that time of year where Raccoons proof to be a problem to homeowners in the Wheaton area.

Raccoons are notorious in the local area. Since raccoons are omnivorous, they will eat anything that smells good to them, whether it is in your yard, like bird food or garden plants or goodies out of the trash can. They can also den in sheds, garages, garbage piles and tree cavities.
Raccoons will typically get into a home thru the roof, but can also come in at ground level. There are several common roof entry points, roof vents, and soffit vents are the most likely, but they will also just tear a hole in the roof if they can. In Wheaton raccoons can live in the attic or crawl space year round. Therefore, if you hear a scratching or thumping sound at night in your home, have Animal Trackers Wildlife come in and investigate your home. Raccoons can be aggressive and attack when they feel like their nest is being threatened, especially during the baby season. Raccoons also are notorious carriers of various diseases, especially rabies and salmonella. If you are ever bitten or attacked by a raccoon in your yard or home, seek medical attention immediately!

Chimney Swift Bird Season

Chimney Swifts, nature’s pesticide free insect collectors, are nesting in a chimney near you right now. They are a protected bird, hence we cannot mess with them; but really, they are super beneficial and will be gone before you know it. Have a quick look at what a nest of these beauties look like!

Today Tony from Animal Trackers Wildlife Shows you want the next of the Chimney Swift looks like. This protected bird species is truly remarkable. Because they are a protected species we cannot do anything to remove them if they get into your chimney. The good news is these birds will migrate south in the fall, in which we then recommend installing a new chimney cap to prevent them from coming back next season.

Cool and Interesting Facts about Chimney Swifts

  • These birds fly constantly, if they aren’t sleeping or nesting they are in flight. These birds even bathe in flight by sliding down to water.
  • They have a glue like saliva that they use to “cement” their nests to chimney walls and rock faces.
  • These birds feed solely on insects such as mosquitos.
